Alcohol

Drinking wisely is about considering everything from how much you drink to the reasons why you choose to drink.

If you’re worried about alcohol affecting your eyes, you don’t need to give it up completely.

Drinking from time to time is not likely to cause any major damage to your eyesight. But, if you’re a heavy drinker, or have been one in the past, you could be at a much higher risk of alcohol-related eye damage.

Exercise

Exercise regularly
The eyes need oxygen to stay healthy and comfortable. Growing scientific evidence suggests that exercise can increase crucial oxygen supplies to the optic nerve and lower pressure in the eye.

Reducing eye pressure can help control conditions such as glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Exercise can also prevent the progression of diabetes, which in severe cases can lead to diabetic retinopathy.

Healthy Eating

Eat right for good sight
Eating a healthy balanced diet can reduce your risk of developing common eye conditions.  Eye friendly nutrients found in many fruits and vegetables including spinach, red peppers, kale, leeks, avocado, peaches and blueberries can help to protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – a condition that impairs the vision of more than 600,000 people in the UK and is the leading cause of blindness in the western world.

Giving up Smoking
Most people know that smoking causes lung cancer, but not many realise that it can also cause blindness. Smokers are up to four times more likely than non-smokers to develop Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Perhaps you are a smoker who would like to cut back or even give up for good?

When you quit smoking, good things start to happen - you can begin to see almost immediate improvements to your health.

Benefits of quitting smoking

Quitting will improve your health whatever your age and no matter how long you have smoked.

Driving with Sight Loss

You must tell the DVLA if you’ve got any problem with your eyesight that affects both of your eyes, or the remaining eye if you only have one eye.

This does not include being short or long sighted or colour blind. You also do not need to say if you’ve had surgery to correct short sightedness and can meet the eyesight standards.

Check if you need to tell DVLA about your eyesight problem by searching the A to Z of medical conditions that could affect your driving.

Please note that these will be changing shortly please check this page regularly for any updates.

You could be prosecuted if you drive without meeting the standards of vision for driving.

The Good Sleep Guide

Sleep is an essential function that is interconnected with several other mental and physical health conditions.  We know that getting a good night’s sleep can make a remarkable difference to your mood and overall well-being.

Many view sleep as a luxury and think the benefits of limiting the hours they spend asleep outweigh the costs.  We often overlook the potential long term health consequences of insufficient sleep, and the impact that health problems can ultimately have on one’s time and productivity.
