Good nutrition is very important for both general health and eye health. It helps the body to grow, repair wear and tear, protect against infection and function properly.

The causes of macular disease are not fully understood, however scientists believe that a combination of factors are responsible including genetics, age, diet, smoking and sunlight.

Tricia Sail and her friend Cathie Rowe took part in the third series of the hit BBC Television series ‘Race Across the World’.

Tricia who is Severely Visually Impaired and Cathie raced across Canada without smartphones, internet access or credit cards and on a very limited budget.

‘Visual Hallucinations Explained’

This event took place on the Tuesday 8 August 2023

Charles Bonnet Syndrome can develop when someone of any age – children are not exempt – has lost over 60% of their sight. It causes vivid, silent, visual hallucinations which range from disturbing to terrifying. What is seen depends on which part of the brain is firing. It is not a mental health condition but caused entirely by loss of sight.

By partnering up with one of their friendly My Sighted Guide volunteers, you can get out and about and enjoy life’s pleasures with someone who shares your interests; it could be a simple walk in the park, a shopping trip, going to a football match or a visit to an art gallery.

We would very much like to thank Paula Martin for sharing her time and knowledge as our speaker at this week’s Devon in Sight Telephone Speaker Event. Paula is the Community Wellbeing Coach working as part of the Social Prescribing Team for the Mid Devon Healthcare Primary Care Network.

Paula shaped her talk around the questions people had submitted about meditation and mindfulness, what they are, how they help and how to do it. Paula then took us through a short mediation body scan by which was incredibly relaxing. She then went on to talk about how research has evidenced the mental and physical benefits that can be gained from practicing mindfulness and meditation.

Natalie gave us an oversite of how and why Calibre was originally formed in 1974 how it developed into the far reaching service it is now with over 40,000 members enjoying their library of over 12,000 unabridged books.

Calibre is a free service whose listening materials are available to people of all ages who have a print disability so this includes people who are physically unable to read print for a variety of reasons examples would include dyslexia, multiple sclerosis or arthritis as well as sight loss.

This event took place on the Tuesday 16th March 2021.

Ian Johnstone, Devon and Somerset Fire Service

Ian talked about would happen as part of this service, that they would like to visit you in your home, at a convenient time, to see what they can do together with you to make you safer. Ian reassured listeners that all visits are non-judgmental about your home circumstances and that they are there to provide advice, assistance, equipment and support.

The visits last between 30 and 45 minutes where the technician will walk through each room with you identifying and discussing any further support where needed, including fitting specialist fire safety equipment where required.

During the Covid-19 restrictions they are still providing a Home Safety Check service but are focusing on those people who are at at a higher risk.

Nick talked about the Low Vision Assessment and Therapy service that Optima offers in many areas within the South West which is funded by the NHS, as well as private consultations.

For people with sight loss, life becomes a challenge; not just the difficulty of getting out and about, but also the everyday tasks that we take for granted – like turning on the radio in the morning to listen to the news.

Alyson manages a team of Rehabilitation Officers (ROVIs) who offer information, support and training to people who are blind or partially sighted. Anyone with sight loss can access this service.
