NHS England have decided to stop routinely providing drugs which prevent people going blind. These particular drugs are effective when treating a condition called severe refractory (unmanageable) uveitis. NHS said there is insufficient evidence to prove the drugs are effective. We disagree with their decision and believe these drugs should still be offered as an option.

Uveitis is a rare condition, with about 220 adults and 100 children needing this treatment per year. People who have this condition don’t have any other treatment options, without these drugs they will be left to go blind. We believe that 1 person losing their sight to a condition that is preventable is too many.

NHS England are going to re-evaluate the evidence in October. They then have the opportunity to reverse this decision between October and March 2016.
