Exeter University Alumni presentation

Members of University of Exeter Alumni Club monthly meeting turned out in their numbers on Monday 25th March to listen to an interactive sight loss awareness presentation at the Cowick Barton Inn, presented by Margaret Vickers, Community Support Worker, Mid Devon.

Focusing on the three most common causes of sight loss; age related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts, attendees were surprised to see that Devon came out as one of the top counties with the highest number of people registered for visual impairment.

Margaret invited members to try out various simulator spectacles and challenged them to pour a drink, using a level liquid indicator as an aid, or to go to the bar and order a drink and pay for it and to find the exit. Members took up the gauntlet and commented afterwards just how difficult they had found these seemingly simple everyday tasks but they did find ways to complete their challenges.

Members learned about the Devon in Sight Community Support service and other local organisations across Devon.

Comments afterwards included "An interesting talk and the information was delivered in a very practical way." "It raised my awareness of the real impact of living with sight loss when trying to do every day tasks, thank you."
