The East Devon & Sid Vale Talking Newspapers reopens

THE EAST DEVON AND SID VALE TALKING NEWSPAPER UPDATE

Your local Talking Newspaper still exists! However, as with all voluntary organisations, our service has been suspended owing to the Covid 19 government restrictions, but now that the lockdown measures are easing we are making plans to restart weekly recordings. Hopefully, our valued service will be back before the end of the Summer or early Autumn at the latest. Should you not be one of our listeners, please find out how you can receive our weekly recorded digest of local news and our quarterly magazine from the information that follows.

WHAT IS A TALKING NEWSPAPER?

Any person who is visually impaired or, in any way ‘print disabled,’ can receive all their local news from our free Talking Newspaper service – hearing what others can read for themselves. Newsworthy and entertaining items are recorded onto audio sticks from the local newspapers covering the towns and villages of the Sid Valley. The Post Office generously distributes the sticks free of charge direct to listeners’ homes.  A quarterly magazine is also recorded and distributed in the same way.

WHO CAN RECEIVE A TALKING NEWSPAPER?

Anyone who is visually impaired or unable to read print for whatever reason.

 WHAT EQUIPMENT IS PROVIDED?

All listeners are provided with a playback device with which to play the audio stick. Support and instruction is provided on how to make use of the device.

HOW ARE THE AUDIO STICKS RETURNED?

By ‘free post’ in the plastic yellow wallet in which they are sent.

WHO ARE WE?

We are a registered charity committed to supporting the visually impaired through our network of dedicated volunteers. Our objective is to support all visually impaired people in our area to access news and information about the community in which they live. Our Patron in the well-known broadcaster, Jeremy Vine.

WHO IS THIS INFORMATION AIMED AT?

To family friends and the support agencies of visually impaired individuals who we would ask to draw our free service to their attention.
