Speaker Event 19: Kiera Dodds and Anne Clayton - Living Options

This event took place on the Tuesday 27 April 2021.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Kiera Dodds and Anne Clayton from Living Options for joining us as speakers on 27th of April for our Sight Telephone Speaker Event.

Both Anne and Kiera gave us a brief history of the origins of Living Options and then went on to describe the range of help and support services they offer for people with a long term health condition, disability and/or who are deaf, where BSL is their first language.

Speaker Event 18: Joanna Parsons - Cooking with Confidence Workshop

This event took place on the Tuesday 20 April 2021.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Jo Parsons for joining us as our speaker for this week’s Devon in Sight Telephone Speaker Event.

Jo shared with us her experience of sight loss from an early age and how this did not deter her from training to become a chef and then to training and supporting others with sight loss in this field. More recently she has been integral to the development of a variety of community meal projects within the Kingsbridge area.

Speaker Event 17: Paula Martin - Wellbeing Coach and Social Prescriber, Mid Devon, Healthcare Primary Care Network

This event took place on the Tuesday 13 April 2021.

We would very much like to thank Paula Martin for sharing her time and knowledge as our speaker at this week’s Devon in Sight Telephone Speaker Event. Paula is the Community Wellbeing Coach working as part of the Social Prescribing Team for the Mid Devon Healthcare Primary Care Network.

Paula shaped her talk around the questions people had submitted about meditation and mindfulness, what they are, how they help and how to do it. Paula then took us through a short mediation body scan by which was incredibly relaxing. She then went on to talk about how research has evidenced the mental and physical benefits that can be gained from practicing mindfulness and meditation.

Calibre Audio Library

Speaker Event 16: Natalie Moore - Calibre Audio 

This event took place on the Tuesday 6 April 2021.

Natalie gave us an oversite of how and why Calibre was originally formed in 1974 how it developed into the far reaching service it is now with over 40,000 members enjoying their library of over 12,000 unabridged books.

Calibre is a free service whose listening materials are available to people of all ages who have a print disability so this includes people who are physically unable to read print for a variety of reasons examples would include dyslexia, multiple sclerosis or arthritis as well as sight loss.

This event took place on the Tuesday 30 March 2021.

Judy Pride, South West Regional Manager for the Macular Society.

Judy will be talking about how even small aids can make a huge difference to people with sight loss and sharing some of her life hacks that can help make day to day life easier

Jason talked about his role within the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) and the different services and support they offer to people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus.

Speaker Event 14: IAN JOHNSTON, DEVON AND SOMERSET FIRE SERVICE

This event took place on the Tuesday 16th March 2021.

Ian Johnstone, Devon and Somerset Fire Service

Ian talked about would happen as part of this service, that they would like to visit you in your home, at a convenient time, to see what they can do together with you to make you safer. Ian reassured listeners that all visits are non-judgmental about your home circumstances and that they are there to provide advice, assistance, equipment and support.

The visits last between 30 and 45 minutes where the technician will walk through each room with you identifying and discussing any further support where needed, including fitting specialist fire safety equipment where required.

During the Covid-19 restrictions they are still providing a Home Safety Check service but are focusing on those people who are at at a higher risk.

Speaker Event 14: Nick Collins - Optima Low Vision Services

This event took place on the Tuesday 9th March 2021.

Nick Collins, Director of Optima Low Vision Services and Certified Low Vision Therapist

Nick talked about the Low Vision Assessment and Therapy service that Optima offers in many areas within the South West which is funded by the NHS, as well as private consultations.

He also discussed some of the products Optima offer, products from simple pocket magnifiers, illuminated magnifiers, anti-glare filters to telescopic aids and electronic video magnifiers. We also provide a

In addition Optima provides a wide range of professional training course for organisations and individuals wishing to develop low vision services.

Speaker Event 14: Judith Potts - Founder of Esme's Umbrella

This event took place on the Tuesday 2 March 2021.

Judith is founder of the charity Esme’s Umbrella.

Charles Bonnet Syndrome can develop when someone of any age – children are not exempt – has lost over 60% of their sight. It causes vivid, silent, visual hallucinations which range from disturbing to terrifying. What is seen depends on which part of the brain is firing. It is not a mental health condition but caused entirely by loss of sight.

Glenn is the Chief Executive Officer at Sight and Sound Technology, a leading provider of Assistive Technology.

Sight and Sound provide hardware and software to the blind and partially sighted, they work with you from initial assessment through to lifetime support. Sight and Sound Technology is the one-stop-shop for all your assistive technology needs.

Speaker Event 11: Simon Parsons - Regional Development Manager British Wireless for the Blind

This event took place on the Tuesday 9 February 2021.

Simon is the Regional Development Manager for British Wireless for the Blind and he provide equipment on a free loan to those who are unable to afford a specially adapted radio.

For people with sight loss, life becomes a challenge; not just the difficulty of getting out and about, but also the everyday tasks that we take for granted – like turning on the radio in the morning to listen to the news.

Speaker Event 9: Yvonne Brooks - Technology For Life Coordinator South West Region RNIB

This event took place on the Tuesday 26 January 2021.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is one of the UK’s leading sight loss charities and the largest community of blind and partially sighted people.

RNIB's Technology for Life team can help with both simple and complex technology queries and issues offering information, advice and guidance over the phone, over email or through setting up a volunteer request.

Speaker Event 3: Louise Isaacs - N.H.S. Low Vision Clinic

This event took place on the Tuesday 24 November 2020.

Louise is a Hospital Optometrist in the Low Vision Clinic at the West of England Eye Unit.A free NHS Low Vision Assessment is available to everyone who has a diagnosed sight loss. Low vision aids are available on long term loan to help make daily activities easier.

Speaker Event 2: Grahame Flynn - Chief Executive Officer Devon in Sight

This event took place on the Tuesday 17 November 2020.

Grahame became Devon in Sight’s Chief Executive Officer in April 2013, and since then has been working tirelessly developing our services and building relationships with partner agencies to ensure that people who are blind or partially sighted in Devon receive the best possible services.

Alyson Badnell

Speaker Event 1: Alyson Badnell - Manager, Sensory Team (Devon County Council)

This event took place on the Tuesday 10 November 2020.

Alyson manages a team of Rehabilitation Officers (ROVIs) who offer information, support and training to people who are blind or partially sighted. Anyone with sight loss can access this service.
