Why does Devon in Sight have Voting Members?
Firstly, we want service users and others involved with sight loss services to have a say in how we develop, and to be able to vote on important issues. Secondly, under our constitution, for our Annual General Meeting ( AGM) to be valid we must have a certain number of Voting Members present or voting by proxy.
What does it mean to be a Voting Member of Devon in Sight?
Becoming a Voting Member means you have the right to vote on issues at our Annual General Meetings and other formal general meetings. We will also keep you updated with news and information about our work and we will send you a copy of our newsletter.
What is the formal role?
Devon in Sight is a registered charity governed by a document called The Memorandum and Articles of Association.
This document describes the Objects of Devon in Sight as:
‘to promote any charitable purpose for the benefit of visually-impaired people (including their families and helpers) who are in need of such assistance and who live or work in the geographical County of Devon’.
Who can become a Voting Member of Devon in Sight?
Anyone can apply to become a Voting Member, including individuals with sight loss (whether you currently use our services or not), families and friends, professionals and anyone who is committed to supporting and encouraging us in our work.
We want you to have a voice and to help us improve what we do. Many of the Staff Team, Volunteers and all our Trustees are also Voting Members.
Are there any restrictions on who can become a Voting Member?
You must live or work within the County of Devon.
Who approves Voting Membership?
Membership is approved by the Trustees.
What authority do Voting Members have?
The charity is governed by a Board of elected Trustees and they are responsible for the oversight and governance of the organisation. Voting Members can vote on items raised at the AGM, including the appointment of Trustees.
What do we expect of Voting Members?
Simply that you take an interest in what we do and how we do it. We want you to have a voice and to help us improve our services. You don’t have to come to the AGM though we will be pleased if you do.
Shouldn’t everyone be entitled to have a say?
Yes, they should be and they are – we pay attention to all the comments, compliments or complaints we receive. However, Voting Members have a formal role within the charity.
What are the benefits of Voting Membership?
The benefit of being a Voting Member is that you can help shape Devon in Sight for the benefit of all. There are no financial or other individual benefits. You will however receive our newsletter and be invited to our Annual General Meeting.
What does it cost to become a Voting Member?
Voting Membership is FREE. However, you undertake that if Devon in Sight is dissolved while you are a Member you will pay a sum not exceeding £1 (one pound) towards the debts and liabilities of the company and the costs and expenses of winding it up.
What details do we keep about you?
We are required to keep a Register of Members as part of our constitution. We keep the details you supply us with on our database. This database is kept securely. We do not share any information about you with third parties without your written consent.
The information you provide in your application will be stored confidentially in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2018 and will only be shared with your consent.
Is Membership transferable?
Membership is not transferable.
